Is ESMA only for Doctors
Chemists all over the country are on strike today. Since morning my usual reasonably heavy OPD is empty. I wondered whether it was due to the new floral shirt I had worn till it dawned on me that the chemists are on strike across the country today to protect their profits which are under threat due to internet availability of medicine. It is a revelation to me how even the uneducated and seemingly unaware public realizes that if chemists are on strike it is a waste of time going to visit doctors. There is no talk of ESMA and other usually brutal measures being brought by the Government to break the strike despite the fact that public will suffer for non availability of essential medicines.
The hospitals and small nursing homes are not permitted to stock and dispense medicines even to their own patients as per interpretation of Drugs and Cosmetic Act as done by some authorities and some High Courts. It is only due to the benevolence of our authorities that the 9 lac plus MBBS doctors who do stock some medicines in India are not behind bars. But God help them if they organize a mass strike across the country to ask for something which is a basic professional necessity for them.
The usually strident press will no doubt be muted spectator to this Pan India non availability of essential services today. I would like medical associations to preserve the press coverage tomorrow of this major event for future reference in case doctors ever decide to "partially" strike work
